FIRE BASE CHERRY TREE WALK

ATTACK ON CHERRY TREE WALK

To once again make the point that the attack on the WALK is deliberate and calculating, below is a shot of an area that is a few minutes walk from the end of the WALK. As it is clear it has no real plantings to speak of, either on the right, were you can just see the Rivulet or in the middle area?

This page will discuss a number of issues that relate to the very core of this organised attack on the viablity of the War Memorial.

1) The project was started 12 years ago with full permission from Council. GO TO PAGE 7 and read the Council BULLETIN of May 1996.

2) All stages have been subjected to very detailed written plans past by Council, AGAIN & AGAIN.

3) All money raised came from the public. No Ratepayers money has been sort or requested.

4) Council does not own these trees.

5) These Trees, the Monument and the Memorial as a whole has been dedicated with a formal Church Service, in 1999 and again in 2004 with the opening of the rebuilt Monument. The whole lengh of the area wrere the CHERRY TREES are planted is a Dedicated and listed Viet Nam War Memorail.

6) The Green Nazis started their work without any consultation with the Walk TRUST.

7) To the best of my information Council holds no plans related to these plantings?

8) The Green Nazis have never sat down with those who support the Walk to explain what their problem is?

9) Over the last few years there has been a large number of attacks on individual Trees, while no other sort of planting have been damaged or attacked?

10) At the open workshop held last year at Council chambers, Council Staff admitted that Council had no money rebuild the Walk way or replace Trees, but they wanted to pull up the walk way, in the area shown in the last image, on this page; to move it away from the Rivulet.

11) I have read the Draft Plan Of Management with care, there is no mention of any budget or money set aside to replace any Trees killed in moving them?.

ABOVE shot of an area that is a few minutes walk from the end of the WALK. As it is clear it has no real plantings to speak of, either on the right, were you can just see the Rivulet or in the general area?

ABOVE shot is a prime example it shows 3 Cherry Trees. In a very narrow area between the Walk/Cycle Way path, the Green Nazis have planted a number of vigorous growing bushes.

This not only blocks the view of the Rivulet from passes by, but is in competition for nutreants with the Cherry Trees. The thicker bush also blocks the sun from the Cherry Trees. These plants were NOT here when the Cherry Trees were planted.

Why if you have a regard for plants and trees would you take this action. Despite in the past some of these locals sying they respect those that serve their Country? Actions speak louder than words! There is no doubting that the Cherry Trees have been targeted to stop them growing.

Also it should be pointed out that when the Cherry Trees were planted these other plants close to the Rivulet were NOT there! The area in fact was very similar to the area on the right. Another point should be made is the false use of 'Raparian' Zone and Fisheries Act against the plantings of Cherry Trees. SEE BELOW

ABOVE; once again it is clear that unauthorised over planting has taken place right next to the line of Cherry Trees as they follow the Cycle/Walk Way.

ABOVE; is a shot futher up the Cycle/Walk way from the images directly above. It shows that the bank is perfectly stable. The area is clean and tidy, not the case when the WALK was started, in 1996.

See Page 3, "1999 PARADE", for other images of the poor state of the Mittagong Rivulet before the project started. What is another false argument about the Mittagong Rivulet? Those who would seek to dishonor our War Dead by destroying the Vietnam War Memorial claim that the Mittagong Rivulet is a 'creek'. That is it has continually running water and perhaps has fish?

The fact is the Rivulet provides nothing more that a run off area for parts of Bowral land that is higher. When this area is hit with some wild weather as was the case in June 2007, it is important that the water flow through the Rivulet until it gets to those waterways on the Highlands that feeds the catchment areas and dams for drinking water.

So then rather than allowing the Green Nazis to plant in this area the Council should force them to first submit a detailed plan and have them plan in areas that require it and not trying to destroy the WALK.

NOW Council says this "Unfortunately there have been some misleading and inaccurate reports associated with the draft Plan of Management for Mittagong Creek Reserve".

MY COMMENTS:- Now This site reflects in the images what is present at the Cherry Tree Walk. I have not suddenly gone out in the dead of night and planted heaps of trees. These trees and bushes impacted on the WALK Trees have been in the ground years. Why was there not someone from the Council who said, "hang on a miniute this area is for the Vietnam War Memorial as per the 1996 agreement and the Motion again past at Council in April 2004".

Which I must say was the result of a campaign such as this one to prevent the Council stopping the WALK from progressing. At that time the moves were being taken without public scrutiny? The Present Mayor of who you can contact via the Contact information on page 8, has always supported the WALK and was not part of the 2004 attack.

While the Council has allowed staff to prepare a Draft Plan of Management for public discussion, it was on display at 3 local government officers. To get a copy so I could study it in detail I was forced to photo copy 40 pages in order to have a copy?

I have a large footprint in the Veteran Community. I have worked as part first of all on the Committee that established the WALK in 1996. Of later years I have worked as a Vounteer and taken hundereds of images of the WALK over the years. I helped on the Re-furbishment of the Monument when it was rebuilt in 2004. Just a point; that Monument is worth well over $100,000 a donation to the Community. Not one cent was taken from ratepayers funds to build it.

The information on this site is coming directly from Council Papers, the Bulletin, the 2004 Motion and from the Draft Plan of Management. It is coming from my experience and my opinions and my passion that the WALK be allowed to be completed at agreed to by Council.

COUNCIL goes on to say:- "The proposals in the draft Plan of Management are designed to ensure the long term sustainability of Cherry Tree Walk. Previous works along the walk and creek have not been compatible due to some poor planning. This has included the proximity planting of native trees and shrubs, many of which are identified for removal".

MY COMMENTS:- Now If this is really the objective, then only the willy nilly plantings of the Greenies need to be removed to allow near by Cherry Trees to see the sun. The plants removed can be re-located in other areas of the Rivulet that needs them away from the WALK. Also none of these "planting" plans/projects were ever made public by Council or the Greenies? Why not if you have nothing to hide? Were as all the Plans for the CHERRY TREE WALK were submitted to Council, again and again and PASSED, by Councilors and Council Staff. These plans were made public on radio, via print media and ex-Service Newsletters, and the TRUST Newsletters.

NOT ONE single sheet of paper of Greenie objectives have ever been made public with a clear picture of their planting objectives?

COUNCIL goes on to say:-  "Also, the recreational path being located too close to the creek with corresponding sustainability concerns".

MY COMMENTS:- This is a real concern. If you look at the image above showing the Cherry Trees grown strongly on the bank there is no doubt that the bank is firm and the Trees nor the Walk way propose any danger to the Rivulet. If you look higher up the image you can see bushes and trees planted between the Cherry Trees and the Bank of the Rivulet. These are the plants that need to be relocated as they do threaten the stability of the bank in that area.

COUNCIL goes on to say:- "In finishing, Council is fully supportive of the Cherry Tree Walk project and looks forward to supporting the walk for the benefit of the whole community".

MY COMMENTS:- If this claim is fair dinkum then Council should stand by its 1996 agreement and the 2004 Motion and allow the WALK to continue to its intended objective and planted to Old South Road.
