WHY
IS THIS HAPPENING?
It
is my opinion that under
presure from the Greenies the Council has drawn
up this plan of Management which will see the ripping
up of parts of the Walk Way and pulling Trees out,
then moved them as little as 50 yards way to be
replanted along a planned re-routed Walk Way?
Council are on record as stating they have No Budget
or Money to buy and replant any Trees that Die.
And DIE they will!
These
are Dedicated Trees to our Fallen from Vietnam.
WHY
ARE THEY BEING MOVED? Under
the guise of requring parts of the Walk Way with
Cherry Trees, that is close to the Rivulet, to be replaced
with
Natives. The Coucil are using legislation that covers
the establishment of what is know as a 'Riparian
Zone". This is a practice to establish natves
along "waterways to protect the banks
of the water way and allow save haven for native
wild life.
However
this plan of management, which does
not even get the name of the Rivulet correct as
the Council Staff insist in calling it a creek?
Seeks to use 'waterway' legislation to force Trees
that have been in the ground for 10 years to be
ripped out. We do not believe they will survive
You
would understand any Vet would be protective of
Native plants and waters ways, and in Australia
in particular there are many waterways in need of
protection. But the Mittagong Rivulet is
nothing more than a huge drain for the local area
when it rains. It does not and has not perhaps for
over 20 years had natives growing next to the Rivulet.
When the Committee started this project they had
to remove tons of WEEDS from the Rivulet and next
to it.
As
they whole area was a dump and long neglected by
Council and others.This
was all paid for by the Committee, now TRUST, who
was building the Memorial. All the work to clean
up the area and Plant Cherry Trees did not
cost the Council or this Community a cent. Either in removal costs
nor labour as it was all done with Volunteer work.
A
WATER WAY has a steady WATER FLOW to sustain
wild life such as fish and natives? I
have a number of images; (which for some reason will
not load on this page?) which shows areas of the
upper Rivulet; bone dry. That is with No water. There
has been no water for months? WHY?
Well
first of all the Council when they built a new subdivision
to the East of the War Memorial they diliberately
created artificial ponds that captured the springs
that used to feed the Rivulet. Also it has not rained
for months. Result? The Rivulet is NOT a water way,
nor a Creek as you would expect from the name, if
you read the Plan of Management. Its
just an overflow drain from the higher parts of
Bowral which in heavy rain moves the water down
to the nearest river.
With
no regular and sustanable water flow; the Rivulat
does not and cannot
support any fish life nor native wild life such
as native frogs.
You would also need to question why for 10 years
of the life of this project it was the Mittagong
Rivulet, THEN, suddenly and without ANY public consulation
it was renamed as Mittagong "Creek".
One
can reasonably suspect that it is an attempt to
give the public the impression that a water way
now suddenly a 'Creek' and not a Rivulet, would
have a continous water flow?
IN
CONCLUSION:
1)
I and those who have supported the WALK for these
12 long years, support a Plan of magement that would
support the Completion of the Vietnam War Memorial
the Cherry Tree walk as per the original agreement
with Council and in line with their 2004 Motion.
(see below).
2)
We donot believe that there is ANY need to rip up
the Walk way to move it, nor is there any need to
Rip up dedicated Cherry Trees. Leave the Walk Way
as is!
3)
We donot believe that there is any conflict with
protecting the integrity of the Rivulet as present
plantings of Cherry Trees support the bank and will
not encourage erotion. As those Trees have been
in place well over 7 years and no issue of
this sort has been rasied before?
4)
For the above reason we believe that the heavy illegal
native plantings in opposition to nearby Cherry
Trees should be removed and planted in areas as
shown on the top image on page 4 of the Site.
5)
That Council should standby its 1996 Agreement and
2004 Motion to anable the project to be completed
and protected by an amended Plan of Management and
that the Greenies be aloted set areas to work in;
that do not conflict with present Planting of Cherry
Trees or any future plantings.
6)
That those aloted areas for the Greenies be published
in an amdeded Plan of Management and made public
and that Council control those aloted areas.
