The Magus is sound composed and arranged by Robin Stone and Harvey O'Sullivan. Rather than be tied solely to one genre they phase between gentle indie pop to death metal/industrial, and all points between, at a moments notice. They derive their name from the 1965 novel by John Fowles that Timothy Leary describes as "the first great psychedelic novel." These young musicians want to make psychedelic music (and John Fowles) cool again. The Magus hovers over an area in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia in a small town called Wingello (population 600). The Magus first came together in July 2003, making music and recording onto an old fashioned 4 track helped beat small town boredom. In October 2003, The Magus upgraded to an 8 track and began composing new material. This resulted in many new songs, like the relaxing Moon Song, the very watery Niar, mystical Darkened Sky and sugar-glazed Departure. As of August 2004, The Magus have written and recorded over 100 original songs. In mid-2006 Harvey suggested to Robin that they recruit a drummer and try their hand at playing some live gigs. Robin's girlfriend, Jacqueline McCue offered and they started practising new and old material. After only a few rehearsals Harvey got an email out of nowhere to do a gig at the Mandarin Club in Sydney. The Magus debuted live on November 25th, 2006, over 3 full years after they started writing material. The Magus was formed for no particular reason, the sole motivation is to pursue the joy of playing and recording music. We play for the trees, or anyone else who cares to listen. We enjoy the sound of water in our songs. The Magus have been played on FBi Radio as their "Demo of The Week" and were Half A Cow Records Demo Of The Month for November 2005.
